Cleghorn signs with SUNY Geneseo

Merritt Centennials assistant captain Henry Cleghorn has commited to play for the State University of New York (SUNY) Geneseo Knights for the 2018-19 season.

Cleghorn led the Centennials in scoring this season with 48 points and also tied for the team lead in goals with 20. The 21-year-old forward from West Vancouver spent the past three seasons in Merritt and piled up 101 points in 163 regular-season games in his BCHL career.

Geneseo is located in Upstate New York and they play in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) in the NCAA’s Division III along with Brockport, Buffalo State, Cortland, Fredonia, New Paltz, Oneonta, Oswego, Plattsburgh, Potsdam and Morrisville State.

Knights assistant coach and BCHL alumni Kris Heeres is excited to have a player with Cleghorn’s experience on the team next year.

“We are thrilled to be adding a player of Henry’s caliber to our roster next season,” said Heeres. “Having three years of experience in the BCHL, in an organization with as much history as the Merritt Centennials, we believe it will serve him well as he makes the jump to the next level.”

Geneseo recently won their second SUNYAC championship in the last three years and have qualified for the NCAA’s Division III national tournament in three of the past five seasons.

The Knights 2017-18 roster featured former Salmon Arm Silverback defenceman Mitch Ferguson and former Langley Rivermen defenceman Will Campion.
