Dr. Richard Wolfe returns as BCHL Academic Lead

The BCHL has announced that Dr. Richard Wolfe is returning as the league’s Academic Lead for the 2026-27 season.

Wolfe is now in his second year with the league. In his role as Academic Lead, he will continue to work with the BCHL’s stable of team academic advisors and coaches, ensuring they are provided with the necessary support and resources to continue mentoring athletes when it comes to their education.

Wolfe is currently an adjunct professor at the University of Victoria’s Gustavson School of Business and was previously a sports management professor at the University of Michigan and Brock University. He is also the founder of the Academics & Athletics: Co-Creating Excellence program, a goal of which is to optimally prepare junior hockey players, academically, for college.

“What I have found about the BCHL, is that it’s exceedingly well organized, very entrepreneurial and the people in management are very supportive,” said Wolfe. “Even though these teams compete on the ice, there is no competition among the academic advisors. They are the least selfish group that I have ever known.”

“It’s been a pleasure to work with the BCHL.”

Wolfe’s position as Academic Lead is part of the BCHL’s Academic Readiness Program, which was introduced in August of last year. The program is designed to provide academic support to student athletes, while aiding them in their hockey journey.

It consists of policies, enhanced support tools and partnerships to ensure that every BCHL athlete is academically prepared to excel in the NCAA, U Sports and beyond.

The program also acts as a tool for collegiate programs to access key academic information and has been utilized by over 100 coaches at that level in its first year of operation.

“Richard really understands the student’s needs,” said BCHL Commissioner Steven Cocker. “If we can provide those student needs prior to our athletes getting to college, when it’s time for them to make that jump, they are already prepared both on the ice and in the classroom.”

“Richard has been phenomenal for our program and I know he’s excited to see the program grow.”
