Former Clippers standout Matt Irwin notches first NHL goal

As someone with his name engraved on the BCHL's top defenceman award trophy in back-to-back seasons, Matt Irwin's hockey resume is already good but it became even better this weekend.

The Brentwood Bay, B.C. native scored his first NHL goal Saturday for the San Jose Sharks in a 4-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche. He was later named 2nd Star of the game.

Irwin had spent the last two seasons with the Sharks American Hockey League affiliate in Worcester, Massachusetts. He had been called to the big club before but never suited up for a game.

The Clippers finished first in their division both years Irwin won the top defenceman award and he earned a scholarship to the University of Massachusetts where he played two seasons before going pro.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound blueliner notched his first NHL point the game prior to his goal when he assisted on a goal by Patrick Marleau.

The Sharks are off to a 5-0 start to the season and they lead the NHL's Pacific Division.
