Lucchini gets FA deal with Pens

Four seasons of hard work at the NCAA level, culminating in team captaincy and status among the best in program history has earned former Trail Smoke Eaters forward Jake Lucchini a shot in the pros.

The Trail native signed an entry-level deal plus a signing bonus on Monday and is set to join the Pittsburgh Penguins organization.

Lucchini is coming off a senior year at Michigan Tech University that saw him captain the club as he surpassed the 100-point plateau for his college career. Unfortunately for the Huskies, they were defeated by Bowling Green on the weekend but it made Lucchini available to the pro ranks.

The 5-foot-11, 183-pound forward posted 11 goals and 15 assists which led Michigan Tech this season. He will most likely join the Penguins American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton where former BCHLers Ryan Scarfo and Ben Sexton are currently playing.

In his BCHL career, Lucchini put up 48 goals and 69 assists for 117 points in 168 games. As team captain in 2015, Lucchini led the team in goals (35), assists (48) and points (83) in 56 games. He was a BCHL 2nd team all star in 2014-15 and after his freshman NCAA season at Michigan Tech, he was named to WCHA all-rookie team in 2015-16

Lucchini attended the Penguins Prospect Development Camp this past June.
