As we approach the holiday break, there were six BCHL alumni that earned weekly honours this week in their respective conferences. Get caught up in the latest NCAA Roundup, presented by CWENCH Hydration.
Big Ten 1st Star of the Week
Tommy Scarfone (G) – Senior – University of Wisconsin (Surrey Eagles)
Scarfone made 26 saves in a 4-0 shutout win over top-ranked Michigan State on Dec. 6 and moved into second place for wins (60) among active NCAA goalies. The Rochester Institute of Technology transfer followed that up with 33 saves on Saturday, including four in overtime, in a 3-2 loss to the Spartans. He finished the weekend with a .952 save percentage and a 1.46 goals-against average.
Scarfone played for the Surrey Eagles for two seasons from 2019 to 2021. He finished his BCHL stint with a career save percentage of .922 and a goals-against average of 2.50. During the shortened 2020-21 pod season, he backstopped the Eagles to first place in the Coquitlam Pod.
Big Ten 2nd Star of the Week
Nathan Airey (G) – Sophomore – University of Minnesota (Cranbrook Bucks)
Airey shutout the NCAA’s eighth-ranked scoring offence in his team’s 6-0 win over Michigan on Dec. 6, making 32 saves and helping kill all three Wolverine power-play opportunities in recording his first career shutout. The 21-year-old remains unbeaten on the year with a 9-0-1 record.
Airey played three seasons for the Cranbrook Bucks from 2020 to 2023. His final year in the league, he won the Michael Garteig Trophy as the league’s top goaltender after posting a .925 save percentage, a 2.44 goals-against average, two shutouts and a record of 23-9-3.
NCHC Defenceman of the Week
Abram Wiebe – Sophomore – University of North Dakota (Chilliwack Chiefs)
Wiebe helped North Dakota to a sweep at Miami last weekend. He recorded four points in the series, with multiple points both nights. On Friday, the Vegas Golden Knights draft pick handed out a pair of assists on UND’s second and third goals to help them erase a two-goal deficit and rally for a 5-4 win. The next night, Wiebe opened the scoring with a power-play goal 2:27 into the game, then setup North Dakota’s final goal, also on the man advantage, to seal a 4-2 victory.
The Mission, B.C. native played three seasons with the Chilliwack Chiefs and was team captain his final year. He notched 95 points in 131 career regular-season games. In 2022-23, Wiebe led his team in scoring with 53 points, which was second among all BCHL blueliners, and was named the winner of the Campbell Blair Trophy as the league’s top defenceman.
CCHA Forward of the Week
Sasha Teleguine – Junior – Lake Superior State University (Chilliwack Chiefs)
Teleguine led all CCHA skaters in goals (four), points (four), power play-goals (two) and shorthanded goals (one) last week, helping Lake Superior State to a split with Bemidji State. After netting his first collegiate hat trick on Saturday in a 4-3 Lakers victory, he also tallied in a 4-2 defeat on Friday.
The 2002-born forward had two separate stints in the BCHL, both with the Chilliwack Chiefs. Teleguine notched 18 points in 20 games during the pod season in 2021, then contributed another 18 points in 47 games during the 2022-23 campaign.
Hockey East Rookie of the Week
Mirko Buttazzoni (F) – Freshman – UMass-Lowell (Alberni Valley, Coquitlam, Brooks)
Buttazzoni scored two goals to help the River Hawks to a shootout win against Boston College last weekend. His first gave UMass-Lowell a 1-0 lead, while his second-period marker gave them a 3-1 edge.
The Langley, B.C. product played three seasons in the BCHL from 2021 to 2024, suiting up for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, Coquitlam Express and Brooks Bandits. He put up 47 points in 53 games for Coquitlam in 2022-23 and was their third-leading scorer. Last year with Brooks, he had 22 points in 20 BCHL games, then added 11 in 12 postseason contests as the Bandits won the Alberta Cup.
Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week
Tristan Allen (D) – Freshman – Rochester Institute of Technology (Merritt/Salmon Arm)
Allen collected four points on a goal and three assists in three games last week. On Dec. 3 vs. Canisius, he assisted on a second-period goal, then found the back of the net on the power play at 4:29 of the third period. It was the third multi-point game of the season for Allen. The Kamloops, B.C. native then dished out assists in each of RIT’s two games vs. Robert Morris over the weekend.
The 2003-born defender played three seasons in the BCHL, split between the Merritt Centennials and the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. His best season was in 2023-24 with Salmon Arm where he totaled 46 points in 52 games, two points back of the league lead among blueliners, and was a finalist for the Campbell Blair Trophy as the league’s top defenceman.
