Victoria Grizzlies forward Alex Newhook has been named the BCHL Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 3, the league announced Monday.
The 18-year-old had four goals and three assists in three games this week, including a hat trick and a five-point effort on Sunday afternoon.
Newhook started his week by picking up an assist in the Grizzlies 5-2 victory over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs on Wednesday. On Saturday, the St. John’s, N.L. product scored his team’s first goal in Victoria’s 4-3 shootout loss to the Powell River Kings. Sunday afternoon was the shining moment of the week for Newhook as he scored three goals and added a pair of assists in a rematch with the Kings as the Grizzlies went on to win 6-2 and reclaim sole possession of first place in the Island Division. He was named the game’s first star.
With less than 10 games to go on the schedule, Newhook, a potential first round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, is starting to run away with the BCHL scoring lead. His 81 points are eight more than his closest competitor and his 29 goals on the year are the fourth-most in the league.
