Powell River’s special teams lead the way in win over Eagles

It's a well known fact that all good things must come to an end. The Surrey Eagles felt the sting of that lesson on Saturday, falling to the Powell River Kings by a 4-1 score while seeing their eight-game winning streak vanish in the process.

There's no arguing that the Kings were ready for the Coastal Conference leaders, as the home team jumped out to a 2-0 lead during a first period that saw them outshoot the Eagles by margin of 17-3. Andrew Pettitt, on the power play, and Matt Garbowsky, shorthanded, did the damage for Powell River in the opening frame.

The Kings extended their lead to three midway through the second period when Reid Campbell scored a man advantage goal set up by Chad Niddery and Darcy Huisman. And while Mike Krgovich drew Surrey back within two with a power-play goal of his own in the final minute of the middle frame, his team was shut down in the final 20 minutes.

Powell River captain Mat Bodie capped the scoring  just over a minute from the end of regulation with his team's second shorthanded goal of the game into an empty net.

Josh Watson stood tall in net for the Kings, stopping 23 shots overall including 13 in the second period. Eagles starter Paul Barclay was relieved after Powell River's second goal of the first period, and Vinny Lessard stopped 31 of 32 shots to close out the game.

The Kings return to the ice on Thursday when they travel to Langley to begin a brief two-game road swing, while the Eagles are next in action on Friday when they host the Alberni Valley Bulldogs.
