2011 Brett Hull Trophy winner Hammond commits to Lakehead

Lakehead University of Canadian Interuniversity Sport has landed a talented scorer from the British Columbia Hockey League as its latest recruit.

The Thunder Bay school has received a commitment from BCHL-leading scorer Mike Hammond for the 2011-12 season.

Hammond captured the Brett Hull Trophy as the league's top scorer after putting up 39 goals and 54 assists in 57 games split between the Cowichan Valley Capitals and Salmon Arm SilverBacks, who acquired him at the roster movement deadline on Jan. 10.

"Mike made a tremendous impact on the SilverBack program during his short time in Salmon Arm," said 'Backs head coach Tim Kehler. "Every fan that had the opportunity to watch him play recognized that he is a special player with incredible offensive talent.

"He was a pleasure to coach and will no doubt make an immediate impact at the university level."

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Victoria native joins fellow BCHL grads Riley McIntosh and Jason Grecica, both Coquitlam Express products, at Lakehead.

In 159 career regular season BCHL games, Hammond posted 82 goals and 117 assists. He scored nine goals and nine assists in 15 games during this season's playoffs.
