Opportunity for Refs, Linesmen

Longtime NHL linesman Brad Lazarowich will be offering his 30 years of pro hockey experience when he and BCHL director of officiating Derek Adams host an upcoming camp for young officials.

The Officials’ Development and Exposure Camp runs June 8 to 11. The development part of the camp will be June 8 and 9 at the Langley Sportsplex and the exposure part will be held June 10 and 11 in Abbotsford, in conjunction with the Merritt Centennials hockey camp.

The camp is open to all ages.

“The first two days will include power skating, fitness workouts and on ice instruction,” said Lazarowich, who recently finished up his NHL career after 1,971 games. “There will be some class room discussions but I strongly believe you learn more on the ice and in game situations.”

Also at the development portion will be NHL referee Trevor Hanson along with AHL and WHL referee Brett Iverson. NHL linesmen assisting at the camp are Ryan Gibbons, Lonnie Cameron and Kiel Murchison. Adams and Lazarowich will be there as instructors.

There will be live hockey games to officiate starting on the Friday at 2 p.m. in Abbotsford. All games will be officiated in a four-man system. The games run through Saturday and will be supervised.

Camp cost is $275 which will include meals, instruction, game evaluation, ice time and fitness workouts. Registration will be capped off at 40 officials to ensure more one-on-one instructing and more real game evaluation.
