With the race for playoff position heating up and the postseason looming not far away, Michigan Tech senior and former Nanaimo Clippers standout Reid Sturos was at his best in a pair of big conference games for Michigan Tech.
Sturos scored twice shorthanded, one of them a game-winning goal, and also assisted on a game-tying tally with 11 seconds to go by Trail Smoke Eaters alum Jake Lucchini as Michigan Tech earned five valuable points in a road weekend against Alabama-Huntsville.
In the series opener on Friday, Sturos was lethal on the penalty kill as he struck twice with the Huskies a man short. His first of the night, late in the second period, was the winner and he added an empty-netter as well. The next night, his assist on Lucchini’s goal put the game to a shootout where Michigan Tech earned the extra point. One of Michigan Tech’s assistant captains, Sturos finished the weekend with eight shots on goal and a +2 rating.
A native of Brighton, Mich., Sturos now has six goals and nine helpers on the season.
With Nanaimo in the 2012-13 season, Sturos scored 25 goals and 32 assists for 57 points in 56 games. Now a senior with Michigan Tech, this is the fifth WCHA weekly award in the NCAA career of the 6-foot-2, 185-pound forward. Sturos won the conference’s rookie of the week nod three times in 2013-14.
