BCHL Friday: Chiefs win double OT thriller

The Langley Chiefs took two point at home against the Trail Smoke Eaters on Friday night, and all it took was thirteen goals and the better part of two overtime periods.

After Mac Roy and Milos Gordic each netted regulation time hat tricks, Trevor Elias potted the game winner 2:50 into double overtime to lift the Chiefs to a 7-6 win and spoil a valiant Smokies comeback. Down 5-1 midway through the second frame, Trail received a pair of goals from captain Ryan Bulach en route to tying the game at 6-6 at the end of regulation. Joe Rodwell picked up the win in net for Langley, turning aside 36 shots.

Elsewhere in the Coastal Conference:

  • Ronnie Smith broke a 3-3 deadlock late in the second period and his Clippers teammates added two more in the third, propelling Nanaimo to a 6-3 home ice win over Merritt. Casey Fratkin tallied a pair of assists in a losing cause for the Centennials.
  • A late tally from John Digness lifted Burnaby past visiting Powell River by a 3-1 score. Digness put a centring pass from linemate Garrick Perry and potted the winner past Kings`netminder Taylor Pears with five minutes remaining in the third. Clay Harvey replied with the lone Kings marker.
  • Five Cowichan Valley Capitals contributed multi-point efforts in a 4-2 win over Victoria. Alex Gellert netted the winner for the Caps, who now sit just four points behind the Island Division leaders with 62 points.

Meanwhile, a trio of third period goals — including two from Mike Collins — lifted the Vernon Vipers to a big 4-2 win over the Interior Conference-leading Salmon Arm Silverbacks. Collins`pair sandwiched a Connor Jones tally, bringing the Vipers back from a 2-0 deficit built on first period goals by Silverbacks forwards Justin Cseter and Mark Zengerle. Andrew Hammond stopped 26 of 28 shots in net for the Vipers and was named the game`s first star.

In other Interior Conference action:

  • Curtis McKenzie scored the overtime winner on a power-play, lifting Penticton to a 3-2 home ice win over Westside. Travis Ouellette and Ryan Viselli also tallied for the Vees, while Jordan Gagne and Tyler Krause replied for the visitors.
  • The Prince George Spruce Kings rallied from a four-goal third period deficit but ultimately fell to the Quesnel Millionaires 6-5 in overtime. Brett Howe led the Mills offensively with a goal and two assists while Ben Payne tallied the winning goal with just ten seconds remaining in the first extra frame.
