Berra’s hat trick puts Spruce Kings back in the win column

The Prince George Spruce Kings got two quick goals early in the first period from captain RJay Berra and Nic Desousa on their way to a 4-2 win over the visiting Quesnel Millionaires.

Berra scored twice in the second period, both on the power play, to complete the hat trick and snapped the Spruce Kings lengthy stretch without a win. Berra got first star for his showing.

Spruce Kings goalie Kirk Thompson had to be sharp in the third period when the Mills outshot Prince George 11-5. Michael Spring managed to get one puck past Thompson late in the game but it was not enough. Chris Blessing provide the other Quesnel goal.

Meanwhile, Salmon Arm and Penticton went at it again Friday in Salmon Arm with the home side sending the fans home happy as they snagged a 5-4 win. Leads changed multiple times after David Killip opened scoring at 4:30 of the first. Myles McCauley scored twice for Vernon but Bryce Gervais earned first star for his tying and winning goals in the third period when Gorillas scored three times to grab the win.

The Merritt Centennials completed a weekend sweep of the Westside Warriors with a 2-1 win. The Cents' David Sabey scored at 9:25 of the first but Travis Blanleil replied before the end of the period. Evan Stack's power play marker towards the end of the second was the winning goal. Lino Chimienti made 33 saves and took first star.

In Alberni Valley, Frank Slubowski ensured a point for the Bulldogs and took first star with a 41-save masterpiece in a 1-1 goalie battle. Vernon's Michael Zalewski scored midway through the second but Alberni Valley's Casey Bailey tied it early in the third. Vernon tested Slubowski with eight shots in OT but couldn't beat him. Kirby Halcrow took third star for Vernon with 26 saves.

In Victoria, all the scoring was done in the last 10 minutes of the third period as the Trail Smoke Eaters earned a much-needed road win, 2-1 over the Grizzlies. Cullen Bradshaw opened the scoring at 12:03 of the frame and teammate Ryan Aynsley doubled the lead just after. Greg Simpson replied for Victoria but that was all they'd get.
