Brothers Jordie and Jamie Benn first BCHL alums to be NHL teammates

Brothers with BCHL roots have made it to the NHL before but on Tuesday night, Jamie and Jordie Benn became the first to appear in the league as teammates as they suited up for the Dallas Stars.

Jordie, who is 24 and two years older than Jamie, made his NHL debut Tuesday night while his younger brother in now in his third NHL season. The last BCHL brother tandem to make the NHL was the Kariya brothers, Paul and Steve.

Dallas wound up losing Tuesday’s game 5-4 to the Detroit Red Wings but the night became even more memorable when both Benn brothers assisted on Dallas’ first goal, a first-period marker by Loui Eriksson.

“Obviously you want to win, but I got to play in the NHL with my brother so it was awesome,” said Jordie to a scrum of media members after the game.

With a few more NHL paycheques under his belt, Jamie was the one who footed the bill to have their parents fly in for the game.

“As soon as I got the call, my brother flew them in so it’s kind of nice to the family here,” said Jordie.

During the 2006-07 season, the Benns were teammates with the Victoria Grizzlies before Jamie was drafted by Dallas and headed to the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets. Jordie was never drafted but signed with the Stars organization after seasons with the ECHL’s Victoria Salmon Kings and the CHL’s Allen Americans.

The last pair of brothers to play together for Dallas was Derian and Kevin Hatcher in the 1995-96 season.
