Chiefs edge Eagles in Game 1

In a game that was almost too close to call, the Langley Chiefs ended up squeaking out a 4-3 win over the Surrey Eagles Monday night in Surrey to kick off the second round of the BCHL playoffs.

Surrey’s Brad McGowan opened the scoring on the power play midway through the first period but before it was over, the Chiefs responded with a goal of their own as Tim Daly put one past Karel St-Laurent to knot the game at one.

In the second, Langley took the lead with a power-play goal by Josh Myers but it wouldn’t last long as Scott Holm of Surrey responded to tie the game just twenty seconds later. With action going both ways, Surrey’s Robert Lindores got the go-ahead goal at 11:01 of the second period only to see the game again knotted up just over a minute later as Matt Ius scored his fourth of the post season.

Langley came out flying in the third and with eight minutes left in the game, Darnell Dyck scored the winning goal off a Brad McBride rebound to secure the victory for the Chiefs. Matt Ius had a goal and two assists to take over the top spot in post-season scoring, a point ahead over Westside’s Alex Grieve. Game 2 of this series will happen Tuesday night in Surrey.

The rest of the league will start Round 2 tonight as well with Vernon and Powell River making their post season debuts after a first-round bye, against Westside and Victoria respectively. The other matchup tonight will see Salmon Arm and Penticton kick off their series in Penticton.
