Coastal Wrap: Bulldogs go back-to-back at home with OT win

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs made it consecutive wins on home ice Saturday night, bouncing back from a slow start to top the Cowichan Valley Capitals in overtime by a 5-4 margin.

The Capitals took leads of 2-0 and 3-1 into the intermissions, but goals by Bulldogs forwards Mitch and Mark MacMillan sent the game to extra time, and offseason acquisition David Dziurynski ended the game with an unassisted effort for his second of the night.

Shawn Mueller, Evan Stibbard and Curtis Gedig tallied for the Capitals, who were outshot by  39-27 margin.

The Bulldogs will attempt to stretch their home winning streak to three when the Langley Chiefs visit next Friday, while the Capitals return home to host the Victoria Grizzlies.

Surrey 1 @ Langley 3

The Chiefs continued making their new house a home, topping Surrey at the Langley Events Centre for the second time in eight days and running their record at their new arena to 3-0.

Andrew Wallace opened the scoring for Surrey just 2:31 after the opening face-off, but the Eagles failed to beat Chiefs netminder Matt Green from that point forward.  Josh Myers, Mac Roy and Trevor Gerling — into an open net —  replied Langley.

The Chiefs and Eagles both travel to Vancouver Island, with Friday openers on tap in Alberni Valley and Surrey respectively.

Nanaimo 3 at Victoria 4 (OT)

The Victoria Grizzlies struggled through their first period on home ice this season, but ultimately rebounded to post a 4-3 victory over Nanaimo in an overtime thriller.

Brandon Fagerheim and Nolan Zarazun put the Clippers ahead with a pair of first period goals in the span of 1:43 to establish a 2-0 lead that held through 40 minutes. But two third period goals by Dustin Mowrey, including the tying goal with just 16 seconds remaining in regulation, knotted the game. Alex Allan then sent Grizzlies fans home happy 3:12 into double overtime.

Richie Virtanen continued his strong early season play in net for Victoria, turning aside 23 Clippers shots, while Chad Carder made 27 saves in a losing effort.

Victoria continues a stretch at Bear Mountain Arena on Friday when they host Cowichan Valley, while Nanaimo returns home for a weekend game against the Surrey Eagles.

Powell River 4 at Burnaby 3 (OT)

Matt Garbowsky helped the Powell River Kings make good on a 46-shot effort on the road, scoring in overtime to spoil the Burnaby Express' home opener at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre.

After Carter Shinaruk broke the ice just 3:30 into regulation to put the Kings ahead, Burnaby went ahead on goals from Jon Puskar and Brad Reid. Puskar scored again late in the second to draw the Express back even following go-ahead goals by Jordan grant and Brenden Forbes.

Harrison May was peppered in net for the Express, seeing 35 shots through 40 minutes and making 42 saves overall. Josh Watson was the less busy of the goaltenders, turning aside 25 of 28 pucks sent his way in the Kings' net.

Burnaby and Powell River both have dates with the Merritt Centennials on tap. The Express begin a home-and-home series with the Cents on the road Wednesday, while the Kings entertain Merritt on Friday on home ice.
