Eagles edge Chiefs to go up a game in series

The Langley Chiefs owned the second half of their Thursday night game against the visiting Surrey Eagles but unfortunately they couldn't recover from the first half that saw Surrey build a 4-0 lead en route to a 4-3 win.

Jeff Vanderlugt and Richard Vanderhoek scored 29 seconds apart early in the first to give the Eagles the early lead and playoff scoring leader Brad McGowan added another late in the frame for a 3-0 first-period advantage.

Vanderhoek tallied again, his second power play goal of the game, just past the midway point of the second to put Surrey up four. The tide turned not long after that as Josh Myers got the home side on the board.

Trevor Gerling scored early in the third and Myers notched a shorthanded, unassisted goal to get the Chiefs to within one but Karel St. Laurent then closed the door in the Surrey crease after that to preserve the win.

McGowan now has six goals and 10 assists in the postseason. Langley's Matt Ius is two points back of him after picking up an assist Thursday. Vanderhoek's two power-play goals earned him 1st Star, Myers was named 2nd Star and St. Laurent took 3rd Star.
