Eagles take over first place with tidy win over Rivermen

The Surrey Eagles got one goal each period and took over top spot in the BCHL's Mainland Division with a 3-1 win over the visiting Langley Rivermen.

Nic Pierog scored shorthanded in the first to open the scoring for Surrey and a power-play goal late in the second by Kevan Kilistoff proved to be the winner after Trevor Cope had tied it for Langley.

In the third, Trevor Cameron added the insurance for Surrey. Michael Santaguida made 30 saves for the win.

In Chilliwack, the Salmon Arm SilverBacks did Surrey a favour by downing the Chiefs 5-1 getting two goals apiece from Alex Gillies and Jordan Levesque. Gillies opened the scoring and Levesque potted the winner in the first before Ben Masella got the Chiefs' only goal. Ryan Schwalbe scored 12 seconds into the third for insurance while Adam Clark stopped 33 shots.

The Penticton Vees won their sixth straight game, a 2-1 comeback win over the West Kelowna Warriors. For the second straight night, Cody DePourcq scored twice. He tied the game in the second and scored the winner with under four minutes left in the third. Marcus Basara had the Warriors goal early in the first.

David Mazurek and Myles Fitzgerald each had four-point evenings as the Victoria Grizzlies won 6-2 at home over the Powell River Kings. Mazurek and Blake Thompson made it 2-0 after one and it was 6-0 after two wih Mazurek adding his second. Jordan Benton and Evan Richardson replied in the third for the Kings.

A Coltyn Hansen hat trick led the Prince George Spruce Kings to a 5-3 home win over the Coquitlam Express. Hansen scored twice in the first and added an empty-netter late to seal it after Will Cook had scored twice in the third to get the Express within one. Kirk Thompson made 38 saves to take 1st Star.

A three-goal second period allowed the Merritt Centennials to take a 5-3 road decision over the Cowichan Valley Capitals. Jarrett Brown and Garrett Skrbich scored power-play goals to put the Caps up 2-1 after one but Bennett Huber, Regan Soquila and Silvan Harper scored for the Cents in the second. Jesse Gordichuk made 26 saves for his first BCHL win.

Chase Van Allen's shorthanded goal was the winner for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs in a 5-4 home win over the Trail Smoke Eaters. Trail opened the scoring early in the first on Jesse Knowler's tally but Teal Burns, Tryg Strand, Hunter Stewart and Evan Tironese made it 4-1 midway through the second. Scott Davidson and Luke Sandler, with his first of two, got Trail back within one before Van Allen's winner.
