Eagles tie series 1-1 with Powell River after overtime triumph

Despite being badly outshot, the Surrey Eagles earned a split in Powell River with a 2-1 overtime victory Saturday night over the Kings.

Powell River opened the scoring in the first period on a goal by Matt Garbowsky and Surrey's Brad McGowan tied the game on a power play just past the midway point of the second.

The third period was scoreless though the Kings outshot the Eagles 15-5. Overtime didn't last long with Daniel Gentzler clinching it for the Eagles 40 seconds in on the only shot by either team in the extra frame.

Surrey's penalty killing in the playoffs remains solid as they held Powell River 0-4 in the game. They killed two straight to start the second and another one late in the third period to ensure overtime.

The Kings held the edge in shots each period and wound up with a 41-18 margin in the game. Eagles goalie Karel St. Laurent earned first star for his performance.

In Vernon, the Salmon Arm SilverBacks took a 2-0 series lead after a stunning 6-0 victory over the Vipers.

Salmon Arm all but ended it in the first period, pumping five goals past Snakes netminders Kirby Halcrow, who was lifted at the 17:29 mark after three goals on seven shots, and Blake Voth who surrendered two others.

There were four different SilverBacks scorers in the opening frame. Brad Reid, Clint Atkinson, Brett Knowles with two and Jarryd Ten Vaanholt had markers. Mike Hammond had two assists in the period and wound up with three in the game.

Ten Vannholt's second of the game, on a power play near the midway point of the second, was the game's only other goal and earned him 1st Star honours.

Vernon was outshot 9-5 in the first period but a were more motivated team in the second and third, outshooting Salmon Arm 29-8 the rest of the way but couldn't solve Kris Moore who earned his first shutout of the 2011 playoffs.

The conference finals now shift to Surrey and Salmon Arm with Game 3 of each set going Monday night at 7 p.m.
