Express forward Krgovich to play in BCIHL next season with SFU Clan

The Simon Fraser University’s Men’s Ice Hockey program is pleased to announce a commitment from forward Michael Krgovich (Coquitlam, B.C.) to attend SFU and join the team for the 2011/12 British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League season.

Krgovich recently completed a four-year junior career that included stints in the Western Hockey League and the British Columbia Hockey League. The 21-year old played in 96 WHL games split between the Red Deer Rebels and Chilliwack Bruins and 139 BCHL contests with the Surrey Eagles and Coquitlam Express. He was a top offensive player for the Eagles and Express, combining to score 46 goals and 121 points over two and a half seasons, and was selected to play in the 2010 BCHL All-Star Game amidst a 53-point year in Surrey.

“Mike is a talented young man who was basically a point-a-game player over his final two seasons in the BCHL,” said SFU general manager Jeff Dubois. “He was a guy who drew considerable interest from a number of Canadian universities and we’re thrilled with his decision. We expect that his abilities will translate into good offensive production at the university level and we’re confident that he’ll enjoy academic and athletic success at SFU.”

The Coquitlam, B.C. product is also an accomplished lacrosse player who helped the Coquitlam Adanacs capture the 2010 Minto Cup as Canadian Junior Lacrosse champions.

“SFU is a great school and being a local kid it just made sense,” says Krgovich. The on ice-and-off ice excellence that is offered is top drawer and my father and sister are also SFU alumni, so the combination of all of those factors sealed the deal and made SFU an easy decision for me.

“I’m looking forward to bringing my experience from playing in the WHL, BCHL and the Minto Cup over my junior career,” he says. “Although I am entering my rookie season I believe I have a lot to bring to the table and the dressing room that will help continue build the winning culture that already exists at SFU. I plan to jump into role where I produce offensively as well as playing a solid defensive game, and I expect us to be a strong, talented group that will accept no less than a Provincial championship.”

Krgovich is the third player to commit to SFU for the 2011/12 season, joining defenceman Tyler Mah (Flin Flon Bombers/SJHL) and winger Tony Oak (Battlefords North Stars/SJHL).
