The Coquitlam NOW newspaper's challenge through the Pennies for Presents initiative was tackled with abandon by the Grade 3 students in Brenda Miyanaga and Marie Primaveras's class at Bramblewood Elementary.

And as a reward for collecting $223.10 in copper coins, the students got a visit from some players on the Coquitlam Express.

Garrick Perry, Massimo Lamacchia, Cody Castro and Alex Petan visited their class, shared a pizza lunch and took on all comers in a game of floor hockey.

The NOW holds the Pennies for Presents challenge every year to help SHARE Family and Community Services Society buy gifts for youth who would otherwise go without at Christmas.

Collections were taken at local RCMP and fire detachments as well as banks and schools. The winning donation from Bramblewood's Grade 3s helped bring the total to $21,062.27 which broke the previous record by more than $3,000.
