Former Spruce King Thiessen grabs monthly AHL award

Former BCHL goalie and current Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins netminder Brad Thiessen has been named the American Hockey League's Goaltender of the Month for February, the league announced Wedenesday.

Out with an injury at the start of the month, the Aldergrove, B.C. native immediately began posting impressive numbers when returned to the Wilkes-Barre Scranton crease Feb. 7. Since then, Thiessen has allowed just 12 goals in 10 games, going 8-2 with a 1.28 goals-against average, a .943 save percentage and three shutouts.

In his first week back, the 24-year-old stopped 99 of 102 shots and was named the AHL player of the week for Feb. 7 to 13.

Thiessen spent three seasons in the BCHL predominantly with the Prince George Spruce Kings but he also made stops in Merritt and Penticton. He fashioned a 47-60-6 record in that time and established a league record with seven shutouts in 2005-06.

After earning a scholarship to Northeastern University, Thiessen played three season's for the Huskies and led the team to the 2009 NCAA tournament. He signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins organization later that year.

Thiessen leads all AHL goalies this season with 26 wins and a 1.90 goals-against average.
