Former Vee Hextall recognized for offensive flair

Penticton Vees product and current University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux forward Brett Hextall was named co-recipient of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's (WCHA) offensive player of the week award, the association announced Tuesday.

Hextall, a 5-foot-11, 195-pound junior right winger from Manhattan Beach, Calif., scored three critical goals to lead North Dakota to a three-point weekend at St. Cloud State. All three of his goals in the series gave the Sioux the lead. He scored a game-winning power-play goal in third period last Saturday to give UND a 3-2 win, after having earlier provided UND a 2-1 lead with an even-strength goal late in the second. He was named the No. 1 star of the game.

Hextall also scored the opening goal late in the first period of last Friday’s 3-3 (tie) at SCSU, earned a plus-2 rating in the series and had five shots on goal.

In two seasons with the Penticton, Hextall scored 42 goals and 75 assists for 117 points in 113 career regular season games. He captained the Vees to the 2008 Fred Page Cup and was then drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes in the NHL Entry Draft.

In the midst of a five-game point streak, Hextall has 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) in 28 games this season. He shared the weekly honour with University of Minnesota senior winger Jacob Cepis.
