Grant leads Capitals to W in Langley

The Cowichan Valley Capitals picked up a pair of important points on the road Saturday night as 20-year old forward Jordan Grant scored once and added four assists to key a 5-4 overtime victory over the Langley Chiefs. Grant began and ended the night's scoring by setting up goals by teammate Darrin Robak, as the blueliner broke the ice at the 8:21 mark of the first period before ending the game two minutes in to the second OT frame.

Langley seemed to have taken control of the game on a pair of occasions during the second period. First, the Chiefs took a two-goal lead after quick tallies by Josh Myers and Matt Ius, and later, after an equalizer by Cowichan's Dante Godinho, Ius put the hosts out front once again.

But the Capitals sent the game to overtime after Godinho contributed his second tying goal of the night at 6:57 of the third period. Netminder Brandon Glover picked up his first BCHL win by stopping 36 shots including eight in overtime.

In other BCHL action on Saturday night, the Victoria Grizzlies rebounded from a two-goal deficit in the third period en route to a 6-5 victory in Alberni Valley. The Bulldogs had gone ahead by three after a trio of second period tallies, but David Morley put Victoria back in the game with a natural hat trick in the span of 7:32. Alberni did equalize in the third period, but Wesley Myron struck the final blow when he broke a 5-5 deadlock with 54 seconds remaining.

In Nanaimo, the Powell River Kings continued to stifle opposition attacks, this time in a 4-0 victory over the Clippers. Matt Garbowsky and Craig Dalrymple each scored in the first and third periods to supply the Kings' scoring, while Sean Maguire made 29 saves to pick up his second BCHL shutout. Charles-Andre Pelletier took the loss for Nanaimo, stopping 27 shots.

In Salmon Arm, the SilverBacks rebounded from a home loss on Friday to top the Coquitlam Express by a 5-4 score in overtime. David Killip opened the scoring with just two seconds remaining in the first period and ended the game 1:51 into OT to earn first star honours, while Steve Axford scored and assisted during a second period rally that gave the Express a brief lead. Chase Martin stopped 26 shots for the victory.

In Merritt, Jeff Jones and Dustin Lebrun each enjoyed three-point evenings as the Centennials captured home wins in consecutive nights with a 6-3 triumph over Westside. The Warriors took a brief lead in the first period, but ultimately found themselves playing catch-up for most of the night. Jones's goal at 6:19 of the second period broke a 2-2 tie and ultimately put the Cents ahead for good.

In Trail, Matt Larose stopped all 35 shots that he faced to lead the Smoke Eaters to a 2-0 victory over Quesnel. The game remained scoreless until early in the third period when Scott Jacklin broke the ice, and the hosts doubled their lead four minutes later on a power-play tally from Erik Copper. The shutout was the first in the BCHL for Larose, who outdueled the Millionaires' Kirby Halcrow on a night when Quesnel held a 35-30 advantage in shots on goal.

In Vernon, the Vipers held the Prince George Spruce Kings to 16 shots and were rewarded with a 3-1 victory at the Wesbild Centre. RJay Berra put the visitors on the board early in the second period, but Vernon's Aaron Hadley equalized later in the frame and tallied the winner at the 1:13 mark of the third. Marcus Basara added an insurance marker minutes later, while Bryton Udy made 15 saves for the win.
