Hextall earns WCHA Rookie of the Week honours

University of North Dakota freshman forward Brett Hextall has been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Rookie of the Week for his performance last weekend against Colorado College.

It is the second time this season the 5-11, 188-pound Penticton Vees grad has been named the league’s rookie of the week. He was also honored on Dec. 16.

Hextall accounted for three goals and four points as UND took three of four points from then-No. 13 CC, enabling the Fighting Sioux to move into sole possession of first place in the WCHA.

A native of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Hextall enjoyed the first two-goal game of his collegiate career on Saturday as the Sioux skated to a 4-4 overtime tie with the Tigers. The following day, Hextall tallied a goal and an assist to lead UND to a 4-3 overtime victory.

All three of Hextall’s goals on the weekend gave the Sioux a lead. He also recorded a +3 plus/minus rating for the weekend. In 35 games this season, Hextall has 12 goals and 11 assists for 23 points and is tied for the team lead with three game-winning goals.

Hextall and the Fighting Sioux conclude the regular season this weekend at No. 19 Wisconsin.
