Mainland Update with Colin Tiggelaar

All Star Domination

The Powell River Kings are sending an unprecedented six players to the BCHL All-Star game in Vernon this January and it's hard to argue the guys that are going from the Kings. Their top four forwards all are heading to the game, led by the BCHL scoring leader Darcy Oakes along with linemate Clay Harvey. Kyle Bodie and Eric Vos are the other two forwards and they play on the same line as well.

Mat Bodie has emerged as a solid defenseman and his offensive output has him making the trip to Vernon. Carson Chubak has really given the Kings a top end goaltender to help them be among the elite of the League. Chubak’s numbers are pretty good with a 13-3-0-0 record, one shutout, 2.56 GAA and a 90.21 save percentage. His GAA is second best, save percentage is tied for seventh and his 13 wins have him tied for third.

Oakes has 29 goals, tops in the BCHL, and 33 assists, which is second. 18 of those goals have come with the man advantage. Kyle Bodie is now second in the scoring derby with 18 goals and a league-best 38 helpers. Harvey has 50 points including 10 power play markers and Vos has 15 goals on the power play and 24 in total.

Mat Bodie has yet to bulge the twine but has 27 assists from the point. All five of these players make up the BCHL’s best power play unit that is clicking at an amazing 30.18%.

Head Coach Kent Lewis will be there as well and if there is a mad advantage in the All Star game, the fans at the Wesbild Center could see an all Powell River Kings unit on the ice. Has this ever happened in the BCHL before?

Talking with Dave Sales in the League office, it hasn’t happened since the League went to the 16-17 team configuration. It is nice to see that the Kings top players were rewarded for their stellar play so far this year. And the team is getting recognized across the nation as the Kings hit the CJHL Top 15 last week and made it again as an honourable mention this week.
