Merritt Centennials’ 2010 season award winners announced

The Merritt Centennials capped off the 2009/10 regular season with their annual awards banquet on Monday night at the Nicola Valley Evangelical Free Church. More than 100 fans, sponsors, volunteers, billets, family and friends attended to make the evening a rousing success.

In addition to handing out the hardware, guests were treated to a dinner and speeches from head coach and GM Luke Pierce, captain Jordan Soquila, Booster Club president Betty Doberstein, long-time supporter and volunteer Rusty Brewer, Director of Hockey Operations Brian Barrett and Society president Jerry Canuel.

The following Centennials players received team awards:

Most Improved Player: Matt Mazzarolo
Academic Scholar: Cole Holowenko
Most Promising Player: Silvan Harper
Most Game Winning Goals: Dustin Johnson/Colton Sobchak
Leading Scorer: Dustin Johnson
Best Plus-Minus: David Sabey
Most Gentlemanly Player: Stephen Wall
Rookie of the Year: Jeff Jones
Best Defenceman: Steve Tresierra
Joe Tennant Award – Most Dedicated Player: Steve Tresierra
Unsung Hero: Jeff Zmurchyk/Derek Hills
Leadership & Ability: Jordan Soquila
Most Valuable player: Jordan Soquila
Friend of Ska-Lu-La: Steve Tresierra

Jeff Zmurchyk and Stephen Wall were also recognized for their work at the Ska-Lu-La Workshop in Merritt while Rusty Brewer also awarded Matt Mazzarolo with her Difference Maker award.

Harry Doberstein was also recognized for the immeasurable amount of volunteer work he does for the team.
