Nanaimo takes battle of Island squads in goal fest with Victoria

A five-goal lead heading into the third period proved anything but safe for the Nanaimo Clippers but they still came out on top of an 8-6 decision with the Victoria Grizzlies. Nanaimo built a 6-1 lead after two but the Grizzlies scored five times in the final frame around a Nanaimo goal by Andrew Gladiuk and got a pair of unassisted efforts from Cam Lawson to make the score 7-6. 1st Star and former Grizzlie Josh Bryan sealed it with and empty-netter.

In Vernon, the Vipers scored three goals in 1:26 late in the third to force OT and win it on 1st Star Adam Tambellini's tally. PG got a hat trick from Paul De Jersey and another from Sean Landry and led 4-1 with less than three minutes to go but Patrick McGillis, Aaron Hadley and Michael Zalewski scored to tie it and set the stage for Tambellini.

The Westside Warriors got a double-OT winner off the stick of Max French to down the host Merritt Centennials 5-4. Merritt held an early 2-0 lead on goals by Brandon Pfeil and Jakob Reichert but Westside chipped away and were up 3-2 after two. Shawn Hochhausen put the Warriors up two but Brendan Lamont and Pfeil tallied to force OT where 1st Star French won it.

In Surrey, the Eagles used a three-goal first period and skated to a 5-1 win over the Coquitlam Express. Tyler Morley had a pair but the winning goal was scored on the power play by Brandon Tanev late in the first. Alexander Kerfoot got the lone Express goal on a power play in the second.

In Powell River, Jamie Phillips posted the first shutout in the BCHL this season in a 5-0 win over the Langley Rivermen. Phillips faced just 15 shots but the game was only 1-0 going into the third on a goal by 1st Star Jarryd Leung. Steven Schmidt, Cohen Adair, Carter Shikaruk and Teagan Waugh scored in the third.

The Penticton Vees appear to have hit their stride and scored nine goals for the second straight night in a 9-1 win over the Trail Smoke Eaters. The Vees led 2-0 after one on goals by Steven Fogarty and Travis St. Denis and made it 6-0 in the second with Mario Lucia, Mike Reilly, St. Denis and Kyle Beaulieu tallying. Clayton Chess broke up Chad Katunar's shutout bid in the third.

In Chilliwack, the Salmon Arm SilverBacks got an early power-play goal by Bryce Gervais but the Chiefs stormed back with five goals from five different players in going on to a 6-4 win. A pair of 'Backs goals on the man-advantage got them to within two going into the third where Morgan Zulinick and Kitt Sitterley traded tallies.

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs got three goals in both the first and second periods and a hat trick from Justin Morello in defeating the Cowichan Valley Capitals 6-2. Morello opened scoring shorthanded and Lars Hepso followed before Jake Charles got the Caps on the board. Dylan Nowakowski scored with one second left in the first. Three 'Dogs goals came in the second including goals two and three for Morello. Matt Brown scored in the third for Cowichan Valley.
