Nanaimo’s Newell accepts scholarship commitment to Yale

The Nanaimo Clippers Junior A Hockey Club are pleased to announce that rookie defenceman Victor Newell has committed to attend Yale University beginning in the 2011/12 season.

Newell has made a significant impression since joining the team in September and has made steady progress in all facets of his game, drawing the attention of several NCAA institutions. The 16-year old has been a force from the blueline at the offensive end of the rink, where he has scored six times and added 23 assists in just 39 games.

“Yale is an excellent choice for Victor and with increased strength and experience the next two seasons,” Clippers head coach Bill Bestwick says. “Victor will be an impact player at the NCAA level.”

Yale is in the Ivy League and is considered one of the finest academic institutions in the United States, combined with an outstanding hockey program headed by Keith Allain. Former Clippers Brendan Mason and Chad Ziegler currently attend Yale and suit up for the Bulldogs.
