NCAA honours for trio of BCHL graduates

A trio of BC Hockey League graduates received recognition for excellent November performances when their repsective conferences announced weekly and monthly awards winners on Tuesday.

Boston College captain and forward Brock Bradford was named Hockey East's Player of the Month for November. The Burnaby native and Coquitlam Express grad registered seven goals and 13 points in eight games, including back-to-back four-point performances against Merrimack (11/14) and New Hampshire (11/15).

The 5-foot-9-inch forward scored two game-winning goals and one power-play goal in the month. To date, the captain has recorded 22 points in 14 games. He enters weekend action leading the country in points per game and checks in at number two among all skaters in college hockey in goals per game.

Meanwhile, Northeastern University goaltender Brad Thiessen was named the Hockey East's Goaltender of the Month for November. Thiessen anchored aHusky defense that only allowed 19 goals in eight games, including five games against nationally-ranked opponents.

Thiessen played every minute in goal in November, making 238 saves for a .926 save percentage and 2.35 goals against average. He played three seasons in the British Columbia Hockey League before coming to Northeastern, and set a league single-season record with seven shutouts and posted a league-record 250:25 shutout streak en route to BCHL All-Star honors.

Finally, University of Denver sophomore goaltender Marc Cheverie was honored as the Red Baron WCHA Defensive Player of the Week. Cheverie earns his second defensive player of the week honor after stopping 67 of 69 shots on goal in the two wins for a .971 saves percentage and posted four shutout periods in 114:43 of action.

He stopped 29 of 30 shots against Colgate and 38 of 39 against Air Force, and led DU’s penalty-kill to a perfect 4-of-4 effort for the weekend. He was also named the game’s first star last Saturday.

On the season, Cheverie sports a 9-5-1 record between the pipes, with a 2.43 goals-against average and a .922 saves percentage over 887:31 of play. He is a NHL draftee of the Florida Panthers.
