NCAA Roundup: Jan. 24

Three former BCHL players were recognized for their superior play with weekly awards in their respective conferences. Read up on the details in this week’s NCAA Roundup presented by CWENCH Hydration.

Atlantic Hockey Forward of the Week

Steven Agriogianis – Graduate – Mercyhurst University (Nanaimo Clippers)

Agriogianis collected five points on three goals and two assists last weekend against Niagara. In Friday’s contest, he dished out a pair of assists in Mercyhurst’s 5-1 win. Then on Saturday, he netted his first career hat trick, with two goals coming on the power play. Agriogianis is up to six goals and 10 assists for 16 points, and now has two multi-goal and four multi-point games so far this season.

The 26-year-old spent the 2019-20 campaign with the Nanaimo Clippers and finished in a tie for third in team scoring with 39 points in 51 games, while his 17 goals were fourth most on his club.

Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week

Matt Kursonis (F) – Freshman – College of the Holy Cross (Alberni Valley Bulldogs)

Kursonis collected five points on three goals and two assists at Bentley last weekend. In Friday’s 3-2 win, the freshman forward opened the scoring with a goal 35 seconds into the first period, then assisted on the game-winning goal in overtime. Then on Saturday, he recorded the first multi-goal game of his college career, while also adding an assist to lead Holy Cross to a 5-1 win. The West Boylston, Mass. native has four goals and four assists for eight points in his last six games.

Kursonis played two seasons with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs from 2022 to 2024, totaling 26 goals, 28 assists and 54 points in 73 regular-season games, and another 23 points in 34 postseason contests.

CCHA Forward of the Week

Liam Malmquist – Senior – University of St. Thomas (Penticton Vees)

Malmquist registered a conference-best four points last week on two goals and two assists, leading St. Thomas to take four of six points from its road series against Lake Superior State. On Friday, he dished out one assist in a 4-3 Tommies’ overtime victory. He then notched his third three-point game of the season, scoring a goal with two helpers in a 3-3 tie, before St. Thomas claimed the bonus point with a shootout win.

The Edina, Minn. native played two BCHL seasons with the Penticton Vees from 2019 to 2021, totaling 64 points in 78 games.
