The opening games of the NCAA Division I hockey season were last weekend and a trio of BCHL alumni received weekly honours in their respective conferences.
ECAC Hockey Forward of the Week
Cody Monds – Junior – Clarkson University (Victoria Grizzlies)
Monds piled up two goals, including the game-winner against the University of Notre Dame while on the road last weekend. He opened the scoring with a one-timer from teammate Ryan Taylor and later secured his second goal in the final frame.
Monds played for the Victoria Grizzlies in 2019-20 and finished in a tie for 11th in league scoring and tops on his team with 59 points in 57 games played.
NCHC Defenceman of the Week
Dylan Anhorn – Graduate – St. Cloud State University (Prince George Spruce Kings)
Anhorn played a key role in helping St. Cloud State open the season with a split against in-state rival St. Thomas. In Saturday’s season opener, the SCSU captain tallied two assists and fired five shots on goal in a 5-4 overtime loss. The next day in, he helped his team record a shutout in a 1-0 victory and put two shots on net.
The 24-year-old played two BCHL seasons with Prince George, piling up a combined 52 points in 111 regular-season games. He also played a huge role in the Spruce Kings back-to-back trips to the Fred Page Cup Final in 2018 and 2019, totaling 21 points in 41 postseason contests and ultimately winning a league championship in his final season in the league.
CCHA Rookie of the Week
John Herrington – Freshman – Lake Superior State University (Prince George Spruce Kings)
Herrington scored his first collegiate goal on Sunday at Michigan State University, helping the Lakers draw to within 3-2 in the third period of a game that the Spartans eventually won by a 4-2 final. In the two-game series, he registered a team-high six shots on goal.
During his three seasons with the Spruce Kings from 2020 to 2023, he amassed 116 points on 54 goals and 62 assists in 136 contests.
