Quesnel’s Smutek commits to UConn

The British Columbia Hockey League's Quesnel Millionaires are pleased to announce that team captain Skyler Smutek has secured a scholarship to attend the University of Connecticut and suit up for the NCAA Division I Huskies.

Smutek joined the Millionaires at the beginning of the 2009/10 season and quickly established himself as a two-way force on the team's blueline. He scored seven times and totalled 34 points in his first full BCHL season and has seven points through 17 games in the current campaign.

“I'm really excited about getting everything worked out,” says Smutek. “It's a big relief knowing where I'll be playing for the next four seasons, especially so early in the year. Connecticut is a great school with a very good hockey program and I'm looking forward to being a part of it and taking the next steps in my education.”

The 20-year old joins a wealth of BCHL grads at Connecticut, including fellow defenceman Tom Janosz and forwards Marcello Ranallo and Sean Ambrosie.

“Skyler is a very competitive young man who is fully deserving of this scholarship,” says Millionaires head coach Doug Hedley. “His leadership qualities are outstanding and UConn is getting a quality player as well as a quality person.”

The entire Quesnel Millionaires would like to congratulate Skyler Smutek on receiving his scholarship and look forward to watching him the rest of the season.
