Rivermen make one goal stand up in blanking of visiting Kings

The Langley Rivermen were outshot 37-14 Saturday night by the Powell River Kings but goalie Jim Kruger kicked out each puck that came his way and led his team to a 1-0 win.

Scott Moyer's goal from Valik Chichkin and Jackson Playfair at 11:48 of the first period would be the only tally of the game. Powell River poured 17 shots on net in the third but couldn't find a way past Kruger. Each team was 0-2 on the power play.

In Victoria, the Grizzlies and Chlliwack Chiefs combined for 12 goals with the home side taking a 7-5 decision. 1st Star Mike Moran scored a hat trick and added an assist but the Grizz still needed to come from behind and two got third-period goals from Alex Holland and another from Dante Godinho to win it. Malcolm Gould had a goal and two assists for Chilliwack.

The Westside Warriors got two goals each period and five points from 1st Star and team captain Tyler Krause on their way to a 6-2 win over the Prince George Spruce Kings. Krause opened the scoring but the game was tied 2-2 after one. Krause's second was the game-winner with Michael King, Travis Blanleil and Richard Vanerhoek adding the others.

In Salmon Arm, the visting Surrey Eagles earned a 2-1 win with Brandon Tanev's shorthanded marker winning it in the third period. The game was scoreless after one and Tyler Morley and Brock Balson exchanged goals in the second. Andrew Hunt stopped 13 shots in the third for Surrey.

The Vernon Vipers scored four straight goals to come from behind and beat the Trail Smoke Eaters 6-3 in Trail. The Smokies' Adam Boytinck opened the scoring and Trail held a 2-1 lead after one. Colton Sparrow tied it for Vernon early in the second but Luke Bertolucci restored the Trail advantage. Adam Tambellini's first of two began the comeback and Darren Nowick had the other two including an empty-netter.

The high-scoring Penticton Vees were held to just two goals but it was enough as they defeated the visiting Cowichan Valley Capitals 2-1. The Vees' Travis St. Denis and the Caps' Matt Brown swapped power-play goals in the first and that would be the only scoring until Mike Reilly's game-winning tally at 13:33 of the third.
