The BCHL and Save-On-Foods have partnered to recognize billet families from across the league for going the extra mile to support BCHL players off the ice with the Billet Family of the Week award.
Throughout the season, we will be going pod-by-pod to recognize one billet family from each team and the outstanding work they do to support junior hockey in their community.
Save-On-Foods will donate a $100 grocery gift card card to each of the families honoured as BCHL Billets of the Week.
The pandemic has made things much more challenging for players and their billet families this year, so the BCHL and Save-On-Foods could not be happier to recognize just a few of these great people in our communities.
We will start off with the three teams in the Coquitlam Pod.
Coquitlam Express
Family: Aaron & Cora Williamson
Billets since: 2020
Current players billeted: Dylan Kruss & Christian MacDougall
Quote:
“We wanted to billet to help these young players continue living their dream. We have two young kids, one who is a goalie, and we wanted a good role model in his life. The Express boys have been so good to our two children. We could not be happier having Dylan and Christian in our home.”
– Aaron Williamson
Powell River Kings
Family: Gord & Anne-Marie Milne
Billets since: 2007
Current player billeted: Dylan Hewlett
Quote:
“A few years ago we decided to re-open our home to hockey players from the Kings that were requiring a billet family. Our community of Powell River always supported my family’s sporting activities and we found billeting an easy way to give back. Our billeting experience has been enjoyable to meet young players from all over Canada and beyond and to hear their stories and get to know them.
With the BCHL offering opportunities for these players to receive scholarships, it is rewarding to be part of these boys dreams for the future. Their drive and determination is great inspiration not only to my family, but also to all the young fans that they encourage in our community. Billeting isn’t just offering a bed to sleep in, it’s an opportunity to welcome a young person into your life and to be a positive influence for them.”
– Anne-Marie Milne
Surrey Eagles
Family: Jim & Bonnie Turton
Current players billeted: Michael Abgrall & Rocco La Cara
Billets since: 2018
Quote:
“Jim and Bonnie embody everything it means to be a billet family, and are amazing ambassadors for Surrey Eagles hockey. Not only have they opened their home and hearts to so many players, they have been tireless advocates for our billet program. Their passion is unmatched and their kindness is incomparable. They bring such incredible energy to the rink, and are the loudest cheers you can hear at our games. I could list all the things they do, but we would be here for a long time. We are beyond lucky to count the Turtons as part of our family.”
– Charlie Black, Assistant General Manager, Surrey Eagles
