SilverBacks earn weekend split with OT win in Westside

The only overtime game Saturday night in the BCHL went in favour of the Salmon Arm SilverBacks who scored a 5-4 road win over the Westside Warriors.

Westside's Connor Dempsey and Salmon Arm's Devin Muller, the eventual 2nd and 3rd Stars of the game, traded goals in the first. In the second with the game tied 2-2, the Warriors seemed to swing momentum their way when affiliate goalie Connor Wilkinson stopped Bryce Gervais on a penalty shot and seconds later Tyler Krause snapped a shot past Kurt Williams to give the home side a 3-2 edge going into the third.

But after going up 4-2 on a Dempsey wraparound effort, the Warriors allowed Morgan Zulinick to pick their pocket to score a shorthanded goal and Mak Barden to tie it shortly after. A late penalty carried over to OT where Brock Balson's shot just nudged over the line to end it.

The Penticton Vees handed the Vernon Vipers their second straight loss with a 6-2 home win. Curtis Loik and Grant Nicholson put the Vees up 2-0 after one, Adam Tambellini got the Snakes on the board early in the second but Steven Fogarty replied to restore the two-goal lead. Aaron Hadley got Vernon back within one but Zach Urban, Mario Lucia and Loik had the final Vees goals.

In Langley, two goals from Darnell Dyck paced the Rivermen offence and 1st Star Michael Barr made 41 saves in a 7-1 defeat of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. Langley went up 4-0 early in the third on Dyck's second before Tryg Strand got the 'Dogs on the board. Three more Langley goals, including Justin Parizek's first of the year, rounded out the scoring.

The Coquitlam Express got a huge 53 saves, including 23 in the second period alone, from 1st Star Khaleed Devji in a 5-3 road win over the Cowichan Valley Capitals. The Express were up 4-0 at one point including a pair from defenceman Clinton Atkinson before Cowichan rallied to get within one but Alexander Kerfoot scored an empty-netter to seal it.

In Surrey, the Eagles took a 5-4 win over the Victoria Grizzlies by scoring two shorthanded goals in the third. The Grizzlies were up 3-2 after two on Wade Murphy's second of the game but Brandon Morley and Robert Lindores both scored with the Eagles a man down. Ben Greiner added needed insurance asTaylor Pernerowski scored just after for Victoria.

The Powell River Kings used a three-goal first to get back on the winning track in a 5-3 road win over the Chilliwack Chiefs. Every goal of the game, excluding Carter Shinkaruk's early in the second, was scored on special teams with Cohen Adair's pair and Jon Jutzi's putting the Kings up 3-0 after one. Derek Huisman had a pair and Michael Spring the other in a Chiefs rally but Teagan Waugh's empty-netter finished things up.

After a scoreless first in Prince George, Trail Smoke Eaters blueliner NIcholas Wong put his team up in the second but the Spruce Kings rallied with a pair by Jujhar Khaira and another by Paul De Jersey. Sean Landrey put PG up three before Clayton Chessa's reply for Trail. De Jersey's empty-netter, his 14th goal of the season, was the final tally.
