Smokies roll up sleeves to help move non-perishables to local food bank

Having accumulated a large amount of toys and non-perishable food items, a Trail volunteer group needed a crew to load everything into a truck and deliver it to an area food bank.

Fortunately, the Trail Smoke Eaters were able to answer the call.

The BCHL team had all 15 available players (the other six were in high school classes) show up to get the goods from the Salvation Army's soup kitchen, load it all into a semi-trailer truck and then deliver it to a local church.

"We made one of those lines like fire do with buckets," said Smokies captain Clayton McEwan. "It went pretty quick that way."

McEwan says it's never an issue to get his teammates to chip in around the community.

"We've got great guys that don't even question it when it comes down to it," he said. "(The Salvation Army) loved it; they took a few pictures too."

With the holidays right around the corner, many BCHL teams will be collecting food and toys for those in need in their communities. Contact the team in your area to see how you can contribute.
