Spruce Kings comeback from 3-0 deficit to top Trail

The Prince George Spruce Kings turned lemons into lemonade on Saturday night, falling behind by three goals in the first period to the Trail Smoke Eaters before bouncing back to secure two points from an overtime win.

Sam Mellor, Darnell Dyck and Matt Wilkins opened up the lead for the Smokies in a first period where they outshot their visitors by a 16-10 margin. But Justin Fillion got Prince George on the board at at 17:52 mark of the period to begin the rally.

A second period goal from Josh Pineiro and a third period effort from Brad Bourke tied the game, before Zac Rasmussen — who picked up two points and was named the game's first star — secured the Spruce Kings' win 1:22 into double overtime.

Both netminders were busy on the night, as Smoke Eaters starter Garrett Beckwith turned faced 37 shots while Alex Wright picked up the win with a 33-save performance.

Prince George puts the wraps on a three-game weekend road swing on Sunday afternoon with a visit to Salmon Arm, while the Smoke Eaters embark on a four-game Coastal swing that kicks off on Wednesday night in Burnaby.
