Spruce Kings forward Murdoch headed to Simon Fraser

The Simon Fraser University’s Men’s Ice Hockey program is pleased to announce a commitment from forward Trent Murdoch (Nanaimo, B.C.) to attend SFU and join the team for the 2011/12 British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League season.

Murdoch joins the Clan following two seasons in the British Columbia Hockey League. He made an immediate impact as a Junior A rookie in 2009/10, scoring 18 goals and totalling 49 points to finish second in team scoring with the expansion Williams Lake Timberwolves. He then split the 2010/11 season between the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and Prince George Spruce Kings, netting six goals and 21 points. His BCHL totals include 112 games played, 24 goals, 70 points and 37 penalty minutes.

Prior to joining the Timberwolves, Murdoch began his junior career with the Comox Valley Glacier Kings of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League and scored 27 goals and 65 points to finish second in league scoring and earn the VIJHL’s Rookie of the Year Award.

"Trent is a talented forward who brings some versatility being able to play both at centre and on the wing," says SFU general manager Jeff Dubois. "We like his skill level and he’s had good success as a guy who’s been counted on to provide offence at the Junior A and B levels. I expect that he should ultimately fit in very well at SFU playing in a similar role."

"I’ve heard nothing but good things about Simon Fraser University and the hockey program, and the back-to-back championships speak for itself," says Murdoch. "My goal is to become an immediate impact player by contributing a solid two-way game and by bringing some playmaking and scoring. Essentially I’m looking to coming in and doing whatever it takes to help the team be successful while I’m here."

The addition of Murdoch brings SFU’s commitment total for next season to 12. He joins a group that includes goaltender Graeme Gordon (Vernon Vipers/BCHL), defencemen Tyler Mah (Flin Flon/SJHL), Derek Henderson (Grand Prairie/AJHL), Kenton Valliant (Portage/MJHL), Todd Fletcher (Ridge Meadows/PIJHL) and Taylor Swaffield (Trail/BCHL) as well as forwards Mike Krgovich (Coquitlam/BCHL), Jonathan Ceci (Estevan/SJHL), Tony Oak (Battlefords/SJHL), Taylor Piller (La Ronge Ice Wolves/SJHL) and Trevor Milner (Notre Dame/SJHL).
