Tanev’s Game 7 OT winner pushes Eagles past Caps, on to Coastal Finals

It's the kind of goal hockey players dream about scoring. It was Game 7 in overtime and Brandon Tanev pounced on the rebound from a Tyler Morley shot and buried it to give the Surrey Eagles a 3-2 win over the visiting Cowichan Valley Capitals.

Brett Knowles' goal with exactly a minute to go in the third made overtime necessary in the game. Surrey opened the scoring on Alex Hagen's goal from Devon Toews and Robert Lindores. The score remained 1-0 until 15:59 of the second when Cowichan Valley's Steven Iacobellis tied the game on a set up by David London and Logan Proulx.

In the third, Hagen scored again, just past the one-minute mark, and it looked like it might stand up as the winner until Knowles' tally evened things up.

The teams that were separated by just one point in the regular season standings wound up producing a best-of-seven series that couldn't have been tighter. Surrey led three games to one but Cowichan guttted out wins of 2-1 in Game 5 and 4-3 in an overtime Game 6 to force the decisive game.

Surrey now moves on to face the #1 seed Powell River Kings in the Coastal Conference Finals beginning Tuesday, March 27 at Hap Parker Arena.
