Former Penticton Vees netminder and University of Wisconsin freshman Joel Rumpel shared the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's rookie of the week nod with University of Denver forward Ty Loney
Rumpel, a 6-foot-3, 180-pounder from Swift Current, Sask., earned his first collegiate shutout with a 36-save, 4-0, gem against host Minnesota State last Friday (Jan. 13) and then went on to stop 29 of 31 shots on goal in a 3-0 setback to the Mavericks last Saturday (Jan. 14). One goal was an empty-netter while the other two came on first period MSU power-plays. For the series, Rumpel stopped 65 of 68 shots on goal for a .956 saves percentage with four shutout periods.
In two seasons with the Vees, Rumpel compiled a 46-15-3 record with a 2.34 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage.
