Vees match league mark with 29th consecutive victory

Heading into the third period, the outcome was still in question but the Penticton Vees tallied three times in the final frame to defeat the Chilliwack Chiefs 5-1 and match the 1989-90 New Westminster Royals with their 29th straight win.

Chilliwack opened the scoring on Derek Huisman's marker at 3:20 of the first but it would be their only goal of the game. Wade Murphy's unassisted goal tied the game shortly after and Connor Reilly's goal early in the second was the winner.

Steven Fogarty, Mike Reilly and Travis St. Denis scored in the third to seal it and ensure the Vees tied the Royals' mark. They'll have a chance to set a new record Tuesday, Feb. 7 when they visit the Chiefs.

The Cowichan Valley Capitals earned an important 3-2 overtime win over the visiting Surrey Eagles with Darrin Robak scoring the winner midway through the first OT. The teams traded goals in the first, Devin Gannon put the Caps up in the second and Trevor Cameron tied it in the third to force OT.

Another OT game happened in Nanaimo where the visiting Powell River Kings topped the Clippers 2-1 with Brendon MacDonald's second of the game winning it in double-overtime. The first and third periods were scoreless but Nanaimo's Andrew Gladiuk and MacDonald traded goals in the second.

Jujhar Khaira of the Prince George Spruce Kings was in on all four goals and helped set up Ben Woodley's winner early in the third in a 4-3 win over the visiting Salmon Arm SilverBacks. The 'Backs led 2-1 after one but Khaira and Ben Matthews scored in the second to put PG up. Morgan Zulinick scored to get the 'Backs within one but that was as close as it got.

In Vernon, Kirby Halcrow stopped 41 shots for the Vipers to shut out the visiting Merritt Centennials 4-0. John Knisley's opening goal at 6:45 in the first was the winner. Adam Tambellini also scored in the first while Michael Zalewski and Jedd Soleway tallied in the third.

The Victoria Grizzlies got five-point nights from Chase Kaiser and Coltyn Hansen but it was not enough as they dropped an 8-5 decision to the visiting Coquitlam Express. Tied 2-2 after one, the teams traded three goals apiece in the second including Cam Lawson's hat trick goal. Coquitlam got three more in the third with Malcolm McKinney and John Siemer each getting their second of the night.

In Westside, the visiting Alberni Valley Bulldogs got three in the second to down the Warriors 4-2. Westside opened the scoring on Travis Blanleil's goal but Tryg Strand, Brandon Halls and Evan Tironese responded in the second for the 'Dogs. Hunter Stewart and Brett McKinnon traded goals in the third.
