Victoria Grizzlies tab Baker as team captain for 2010/11

Leadership is all important to a team thinking championship thoughts, and the Victoria Grizzlies have chosen six players to play key roles on and off the ice during the B.C. Hockey League season.

Yesterday, before the team travelled to Nanaimo for the first of home-and-home exhibition games against the Clippers, the Grizzlies announced second-year defenceman Jake Baker would guide the team as captain this season. Chosen by a team vote, as well as the coaching staff, Baker has a reputation as one of the hardest working players on the team.

“He’s extremely responsible. He’s always the last one off the ice,” said Grizzlies coach Victor Gervais, whose squad downed the Clippers 4-0 last night. Baker’s right-hand man is fellow defenceman Sean Robertson who will be assistant captain.

Madison Dias and Greg Simpson are to act as additional assistants at home, and Ryan Stanimir and Brandon Fagerheim are doing likewise on the road. The only newcomer to the group is Stanimir, who was formerly a top scorer with the Williams Lake Timberwolves.
