The Westside Warriors and the Canadian Cancer Society are teaming up on Friday, October 16 in the fight against cancer. The Warriors will wear special white and pink jerseys that evening in their Britich Columbia Hockey League game against the Merritt Centennials (7 PM, Royal LePage Place).
The jerseys will be auctioned off during the game, with net proceeds going to the Canadian Cancer Society. Wildcat Helicopters of West Kelowna, which hosted a news conference unveiling the jerseys on Oct. 14, are also a big part of the effort with their sponsorship of the jerseys.
The Canadian Cancer Society is selling tickets to the Friday game for the discounted price of $10, with $3 from each ticket going to the society. The Cancer Society will also have people at the game for contests and other fundraising activities.
“We created this special night with the one-time jersey as a way to help support the cancer cause and raise funds to help fight the disease,” said Warriors President and General Manager Gary Gelinas. “In conjunction with (team captain) Joel Woznikoski’s Warriors Score to Cure Cancer program, we are hoping to raise significant money through the jersey auction, so more people in the building will help to accomplish that.”
“We are thrilled that the Warriors have joined us in the fight against cancer,” said Ed Millman of the Canadian Cancer Society. “Their lead has inspired other teams around the league to join the fight against cancer through various events. The Warriors’ dedication to the Canadian Cancer Society and the fight against cancer is truly outstanding.”
First Choice Hair Cutters will also be present at the October 16 game to do hair cuts by donation, with the proceeds to the Canadian Cancer Society.
