Basford scores two in return as Eagles trump Victoria

The Surrey Eagles got back in the win column on Friday night with a 5-2 victory over the Victoria Grizzlies at the South Surrey Arena.

Chris Santiago, who had two goals and an assist, was one of three Eagles with a multi-point night. Santiago opened the scoring in the first period, and restored Surrey’s lead in the second after Derek Bacon had scored the tying goal at the 7:25 mark of the second period.

The teams combined for four goals on 32 shots in a wild and physical third period. Surrey scored two goals nine seconds apart, one from Michael Krgovich and one from Adam Basford, who recently returned to the Eagles from a stint in the WHL. Three minutes later, Basford scored his second goal, giving the Eagles a four-goal lead, and sealing the Grizzlies’ fate. Victoria would add a goal in the last minute.

Eagles goalie Vinny Lessard made 34 saves, including 16 in the third period, to help lift his team to the win. Surrey is without a regulation loss in their last six games, going 6-0-0-2 over that time.

The Eagles are now idle until Friday, November 20 when they host the league-leading Vernon Vipers. The Grizzlies, meanwhile, wrap their four-game road trip with a visit to Powell River on Sunday.
