BCHL Friday: Chan shuts down Kings

On a night where all the seats were free, Burnaby Express netminder Mike Chan showed that you just can't put a price on great goaltending. Chan turned aside 54 Kings shots and Garrick Perry netted the overtime winner on Friday as the Express spoiled a special night in Powell River. Perry's winner secured a 4-3 Burnaby win on an evening where the team's original ownership group was honoured and Kiewit Construction marked the occasion by sponsoring a free ticket promotion for nearly 1700 fans.

Erik Vos and Darcy Oakes each assisted on a pair of Kings goals while recent Express addition John Digness had a multi-point debut. Chad Niddery, Kyle Leahy and Clay Harvey were the only ones to beat Chan though, as Powell River peppered the rookie with 57 shots while allowing just 20.

Elsewhere in Coastal Conference action:

  • Brian Nugent and Dustin Mowrey each posted three points in a 5-2 Victoria win on home ice against Alberni Valley. Nugent scored twice to lead the Grizzlies, while Evan Witt assisted on both Bulldogs markers. Alex Peck turned aside 21 shots in the win.
  • Nick Chartier's overtime tally was the difference for Nanaimo in a 3-2 victory over Cowichan Valley. Andres Franzon scored and assisted for the Clippers, while Zack Currie and Spencer Edwards replied for the Caps.
  • The Surrey Eagles took a 3-0 lead and never looked back, beating the Langley Chiefs 5-2 on home ice. Chris Santiago had a career night for the Eagles, scoring twice and assisting on three goals to mark a night where he was in on the scoring on all five of his team's goals.

Meanwhile, the Westside Warriors accomplished a rare feat, disposing of Salmon Arm by a 5-2 margin at home. Trevor Bailey scored once and assisted on a pair of goals in the victory while Brent Vandenberg scored twice just hours after being acquired in a trade from Burnaby. Kevin Jebson turned aside 32 of 34 Silverbacks shots for the win.

In other Interior Conference action:

  • Garrett Milan posted a hat trick and a pair of Vees teammates also contributed three points in Penticton's 8-2 home ice win over Trail. Denver Manderson assisted on all of Milan's tallies, while Chad Gehon and Ryan Bulach put pucks past Jordan White in a losing cause.
  • It took new Quesnel Millionaires forward Brett Howe all of four minutes to tally a goal with his new club, but his performance was upstaged by a Trevor Hertz hat trick in a 6-4 win over Prince George. Evan Karembelas stopped 27 shots for the win in the Mills' net.
  • Third period goals from Braden Pimm and Connor Jones were the difference in a 4-2 Vernon Vipers victory over Merritt. Kellen Jones scored once and added to assists for the Vipers, who received a 22-save effort from Graeme Gordon.
