BCHL Saturday: Two OT wins for Mainland foes

The Burnaby Express and Powell River Kings worked overtime Saturday, grabbing big wins that highlighted a seven game slate of BC Hockey League action.

After surrendering a 3-2 lead with just 35 seconds remaining in the third period, Reid Edmondson potted the winner 1:14 into double overtime to grab two home-ice points for Burnaby. Alex Valenti, Garrick Perry and Tim Holloway also scored for the Express, while Anders Franzon, Kurtis Bartliff and Joe Perry replied for Nanaimo. Mike Chan stopped 27 of 30 shots for the victory.

Elsewhere in Coastal Conference buildings:

  • Mitch MacMillian, Chris Zaires and Alex Gellert scored third period goals to lead the Cowichan Valley Capitals to a 5-2 win over visiting Langley. Chris Rawlings turned aside 26 shots to earn the victory in the Capitals' net.
  • Four second period goals propelled the Victoria Grizzlies to a 5-3 win on the road in Alberni Valley. Jordan Heywood, Myles MacRae and Brian Nugent all scored once and added an assist for the Grizzlies, who own the league's top record at 9-2.

Meanwhile, the Powell River Kings won their second consecutive game on their four-in-four nights road trip when Mat Bodie's double-overtime penalty shot broke a 4-4 deadlock in Westside. Erik Vos was named the game's first star for his two-point effort, while Evan Karambelas picked up the victory in net for the second time is as many nights. In other Interior Conference arenas:

  • In the BCHL Game of the Week, the Salmon Arm Silverbacks handed Penticton their first regulation loss since March with a 2-1 win that was powered by a two-goal effort by Mark Zengerle. Salmon Arm netminder Bryan Gillis stopped 19 of 20 shots sent his way for the win.
  • Ryan Aynsley's second period goal was the difference in Merritt's 2-1 win on the road in Quesnel. Aynsley also added an assist for the Centennials, who received solid netminding and a second star performance from Harrison May.
  • JF Boisvert scored the winning goal and added two other points in Trail's 5-2 road win over the Vernon Vipers. Nick Sandor scored twice for the Smoke Eaters, who received a 33-save effort from Paul Barclay.
