BCHL Wednesday: Same old story for Kings

Eight more goals, eight straight wins. If it's an act that's starting to get old, you're definitely not a Powell River Kings fan.

The Penticton Vees found out firsthand on Wednesday what the Coastal Conference already knew: these Kings can score, and in bunches. Penticton kicked off their four-game Mainland road swing on the Sunshine Coast, dropping an 8-4 decision to the BC Hockey League's points leader.

The Kings were led offensively by the familiar combination of Darcy Oakes and Clay Harvey, who combined to rack up seven points against the defending Fred Page Cup champs. Kyle and Mat Bodie and Erik Vos also contributed multi-point efforts.

The Vees were without top scorer Curtis Mackenzie and veteran playmaker Denver Manderson, who were both Alberta bound to join Team Canada West for the 2008 World Junior A Challenge.

Carsen Chubak won his sixth consecutive start since joining the Kings, turning aside just 13 shots in the victory. Meanwhile, recently acquired Penticton starter Jordan White was given a rough reception in his return from the WHL. He allowed six goals in 18 shots before being relieved by Sean Bonar.

The Vees and Kings will both head to the Mainland for weekend action. Penticton faces Surrey on Friday before stops in Burnaby and Surrey while Powell River faces the Chiefs and Eagles before heading to Nanaimo on Sunday.

Another streaking team — Westside Warriors — had less luck Wednesday, dropping a 3-2 overtime decision in Cowichan Valley. Alex Gellert was the extra time hero for the Caps while Mickey Spencer and Joey Massingham notched first period tallies.

Jordan Gagne and Michael Quinn replied for Westside, who had won four consecutive games heading into Cowichan Valley.

The Vees and Eagles meet in the lone game on the BC Hockey League schedule Thursday. Catch all the action from South Surrey Arena with BCHL Web TV or in free streaming audio in the BCHL Fanzone.
