Benn and Co. impress at Team Canada camp

Former Victoria Grizzlies forward Jamie Benn finished his first National Junior Team development camp on a high Wednesday, scoring once and adding an assist in a 4-1 intersquad game victory for Team Red. Benn completed the three-game series at the top of the scoring charts with two goals and four points.

The camp, which was held in Ottawa, included four members of last year's gold-medal winning World Junior Hockey Championship squad and seven National Hockey League first-round draft picks.

One of those picks – Burnaby Express graduate Kyle Turris – spent much of the camp centering likely soon-to-be first overall NHL pick John Tavares. Turris recorded a goal over the course of the series.

Also participating was former Salmon Arm Silverback and Edmonton Oilers first rounder Riley Nash. Coming off a successful freshman season at Cornell, many believe that Nash could be a valuable role player and checker for this year's National Junior Team.

Team Canada brass will use their observations from this week's camp to help determine the final list of invitees for December's final evaluation camp. The 2009 World Junior Hockey Championships will take place in Ottawa between December 26th and January 5th.
