Bulldogs’ elder Mitchell inks with SAIT Trojans for coming year

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs would like to announce that forward Sam Mitchell has committed to attend the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology for the 2011-2012 campaign. Mitchell played with younger brother Josh this past season with Alberni Valley.

The SAIT Trojans are located in Calgary and play in the competitive Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference. An Osoyoos, B.C native, Mitchell had several other schools interested in him, ultimately deciding on SAIT, because of the education, hockey program and location.

Mitchell intends to study business adminstration or petroleum engineering in school and will join former Bulldog Warren Muir on the SAIT roster next season.

Mitchell, a hardworking center had his best offensive year last season tallying 16 goals, 30 assists for 46 points and was a team captain his last two seasons.

“I couldn’t be happier for Sam. He is a determined young man that has worked hard for this opportunity,” said Dogs head coach and assistant director of hockey operations Paul Esdale. “Sam proved to everyone this season that not only is he a hardworking, physical leader, but he has a high skill level and able to contibute offensively. The organization would like to personally congratulate Sam and his family for the great news and also would like thank him for his contributions to Port Alberni over the last three seasons.”

“SAIT is very excited about Sam being a SAIT Trojan. He will be a positive addition because of his skill and leadership abilities. Sam is a player we were really trying to recruit for the 2011-12 season,” said SAIT Head Coach Ken Babey.

“Playing for the Bulldogs was an awesome Junior A experience My three seasons as a Bulldog were excellent and it was always great to have the constant support from the local community,” said Mitchell. “I would like to thank my billets, Alice and Lefty Caldwell, Rick and Melinda Geddes. I also would like to thank my teammates, the fans, community, my coaches and all staff involved with the organization.”
