Chiefs playoff hopes remain alive after win in high-scoring affair

A total of 12 goals were scored between the Langley Chiefs and Surrey Eagles in a shootout at South Surrey Arena Sunday afternoon but it was the visitors that came away with a 7-5 win to force a Game 6 Tuesday back in Langley.

The Chiefs scored twice in under a minute in the first period as Kit Sitterley and Matt Ius scored to give Langley a two-goal advantage after one. Sitterley's second of the game early in the second made it 3-0 but touched off wild second period that would see the teams combine for six goals.

Brandon Morley got Surrey on the board and the teams would got on to alternate goals in the second. Langley's Ryan Bakken, Surrey's Daniel Gentzler, Langley's Tim Daly and Surrey's Tim Coish would follow with second-period goals and the Chiefs held a 5-3 lead going into the third.

In the final frame, Langley scored a power-play goal just 35 seconds in, prompting Surrey to replace Karel St. Laurent in net with Andrew Hunt. The move appeared to spur the Eagles as Steve Koshey scored shorthanded and Scott Holm scored to make it 6-5 with five minutes to go.

Surrey continued to push and wound up outshooting Langley 12-3 in the period but couldn't equalize and Ius put the game away with an empty-netter at 19:15. The goal was Ius' second and gave him five points for the game, putting him at the top of the playoff scoring table.

The Eagles lead the series 3-2 now and the teams will play Monday at 7 p.m. at Langley Events Centre.
